2024 has been an exciting year for the continuation and progress of Housing for Heroes build projects in partnership with the Housing First Minnesota Foundation, build partner Lennar, and nonprofit partner the Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans (MACV).
The year will see the construction of four additional Housing for Heroes homes in the Twin Cities metro. It began with the groundbreaking and construction of the 12th Housing for Heroes home in North Minneapolis. The home was completed in early July 2024 and a veteran family now calls it home! The stories of resilient families who live in the Housing for Heroes homes directly fulfill the mission and vision of the Foundation.
In April, the groundbreaking on the second of three Housing for Heroes projects in North Minneapolis this year took place. This build project consists of a new three-bedroom single-family home, with a one-bedroom accessory dwelling unit (ADU), which will be owned and operated by MACV upon completion. Progress is continually being made on the home, with the most recent work being done on insulation and drywall. Once completed, this will be the 13th Housing for Heroes home.
In recent and exciting news, the 14th Housing for Heroes build broke ground in late July, and weekly progress on the construction of this home continues to happen. This 14th home is slated for completion in late fall 2024.
“This is a big year for our Housing for Heroes projects. With the completion of these four new homes, we are closer than ever to seeing a functional end to veteran homelessness in Minnesota. We are so thankful for all the support we have seen this year, and we are excited to say that this momentous goal will soon be within reach,” said Sofia Humphries, Executive Director of the Housing First Minnesota Foundation.
The work being done by Lennar, MACV, and the Housing First Minnesota Foundation has had a significant and lasting impact on veteran families experiencing homelessness in the Twin Cities. With future build projects on the horizon, the hope is that as this work continues, together we can reach our goal to see a functional end to veteran homelessness in Minnesota.
