As 2024 draws to a close, we reflect on a year filled with outstanding achievements in energy-efficient homebuilding. Minnesota’s Green Path continues to guide the industry, promoting innovative building practices through its rigorous testing and certification programs. By providing Home Performance Reports (HPRs) and recognizing homes that achieve Advanced and Master Certification, Green Path empowers builders to showcase their commitment to quality, sustainability, and energy savings.
A large contributor to this success is Xcel Energy, whose support has been instrumental in advancing energy efficiency across Minnesota. Xcel Energy pays the certification application fees for builders that build in their territory and achieve Advanced or Master certification on their homes.
Together, we work to ensure builders and homeowners alike have access to the tools and insights needed to create greener, more cost-effective homes.
A Closer Look at Advanced and Master Certification
Minnesota’s Green Path features three certification levels, with Advanced and Master Certifications representing the pinnacle of energy efficiency. These certifications go beyond standard practices, highlighting homes that meet exceptional criteria for energy performance and sustainability. Builders achieving these levels demonstrate leadership in reducing carbon footprints while delivering tangible benefits to homeowners, such as lower utility bills and enhanced comfort.
“The Green Path program sets high standards for energy-efficient construction, and by being part of it, we ensure that every home we build meets these rigorous guidelines,” shared J.D. Hanson, president of Hanson Builders. “These certifications are a clear indicator of our commitment to creating homes that are efficient, sustainable, and durable.”
“At Lennar, we are always looking for ways to differentiate ourselves through participation in programs like Minnesota’s Green Path and the Parade of Homes,” reiterates Lucas Rutherford, Lennar’s purchasing manager, “We pride ourselves on building life-long products that are energy efficient for a sustainable future while being efficient in every facet of our business, not just energy.”
Honoring 2024’s Outstanding Builders
This year, two builders stood out for their dedication to green building practices, by earning additional recognition through our Designated Green Path Builder program.
Hanson Builders – Silver Status
Hanson Builders achieved Advanced Certification for four homes in 2024, earning them Silver Status for 2025. This acknowledgment is given to Designated Green Path Builders who receive a minimum of three Advanced and/or Master home certifications in a year. Hanson Builders’ focus on quality construction, from high-performance windows to airtight insulation, ensures both comfort and efficiency for homeowners.
“Sustainable design isn’t just about reducing energy consumption; it’s about ensuring that the home stands the test of time,” explains Hanson, “We prioritize the use of durable, high-quality materials that reduce the need for future repairs and replacements, minimizing waste over the long term.”
By incorporating sustainable materials and design practices, Hanson Builders has set a benchmark for the industry, proving that energy efficiency and longevity can go hand in hand.
Lennar – Gold Status
Minnesota’s largest homebuilder, Lennar, earned Gold Status for 2025 by certifying 15 homes at the Advanced level in 2024. Gold Status is awarded to builders that achieve 5+ Advanced and/or Master certified homes in a given year. Lennar’s approach integrates energy-efficient technologies like ENERGY STAR appliances, tankless water heaters, and meticulous air sealing to reduce HERS scores.
“As the cost of living continues to climb, by building quality, energy-efficient homes with lower monthly utility bills, we promote affordability and keep the dream of homeownership attainable in Minnesota,” said Rutherford.
Lennar’s dedication to sustainability ensures they remain a leader in the market while addressing the evolving needs of eco-conscious buyers.
Looking Ahead
Minnesota’s Green Path is proud to celebrate the accomplishments of builders like Hanson Builders and Lennar, whose efforts inspire the entire industry. In 2025 and beyond, Green Path will continue pursuing the mission of advancing energy efficiency, empowering builders, and creating a sustainable future for homeowners and communities alike.
