In an effort to educate new homeowners, the City of Minneapolis is currently discussing a proposed mandate to disclose a home inspection energy report during the time of sale. This inspection would provide information to potential buyers regarding the physical condition and propose energy efficient repairs of the home.
Over 90% of Minneapolis’ housing stock was built before there was a residential energy code requiring insulation in homes (among other energy requirements), and as a result, many property owners pay higher energy bills compared to their counterparts in newer buildings.
The proposed ordinance is currently being discussed in the Public Health, Environment, Civil Rights, and Engagement Committee before it heads to the City Council. Housing First Minnesota will continue to monitor the discussion as it progresses. Click here to learn more.
