As we commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Housing First Minnesota Foundation, it’s heartening to reflect on the remarkable journey of our signature event—the Hearts in Housing Gala. What began a decade ago as a modest luncheon has blossomed into a cornerstone gathering, uniting hundreds in support of our mission to end homelessness in Minnesota.
Humble Beginnings
Ten years ago, the inaugural Hearts in Housing Gala was a small luncheon aimed at rallying support for our cause. Despite its size, the event laid the groundwork for what would become a pivotal annual tradition, bringing together industry professionals and community members dedicated to providing safe and stable housing for those in need in Minnesota.

A Decade of Growth
Each year, the Gala has seen increased attendance and fundraising success, reflecting the growing commitment of our supporters. By 2022, the seventh annual Gala welcomed nearly 400 attendees and raised over $315,000. This has been instrumental in projects like constructing transitional housing for homeless veteran families and renovating apartments for women in recovery and their children.
The momentum continued in 2023, with the Gala selling out at 450 attendees and surpassing previous records by raising more than $420,000. This overwhelming generosity enabled us to embark on our most ambitious Housing for Heroes project to date, building four new homes with accessory dwelling units for veterans experiencing homelessness.
In 2024, we reached new heights. The Gala attracted 550 supporters and shattered records by raising over $467,000. This incredible support has been pivotal in advancing our mission and expanding our impact within the community.

Dressing with Heart
Over the years, the Gala has also become known for its imaginative and elegant themes—each one giving guests the chance to get creative and show their support in style. From masquerade masks and glittering gowns to Kentucky Derby florals and fabulous wide-brimmed hats, every year’s theme has added a unique flair to the night. These festive themes not only set the stage for the celebration but also highlight the creativity and community spirit that fuels our work.

Honoring Our Champions
Throughout the years, the Gala has also served as a platform to recognize individuals and organizations whose dedication has been instrumental to our success. In 2022, we honored Lynne Jensen-Nelson with the Hearts in Housing award and Bob Bennett with the Distinguished Service Award for their unwavering commitment. The following year in 2023, Lennar was named Build Partner of the Year, with Richard and Bonnie Berg receiving the Distinguished Service Award. In 2024, Lennar and Nor-Son Construction were celebrated as Build Partner, Lennar received the Distinguished Service award, and Paul Roecker and Kristin Reinitz were honored with the Hearts in Housing award.

Looking Ahead
As we celebrate the 10th annual Hearts in Housing Gala, we are filled with gratitude for the journey thus far and excitement for the future. This milestone event is not just a celebration of our past achievements but a testament to the collective power of our community. Together, we have transformed a simple luncheon into a beacon of hope and change.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has been part of this journey. Your support fuels our mission and brings us closer to a Minnesota where everyone has a place to call home. Here’s to celebrating our past, embracing the present, and building a brighter future together.
