Nearly 100 members attended the latest Members Only event on Nov. 16. This member-exclusive event series was originally introduced this year as a way to bring together members of the association for a night of networking, learning, and business growth.
During the social hour portion of the event, attendees enjoyed drinks and small bites and were free to mingle with fellow members. This was a great opportunity for members both new and old to gain exposure to the industry and make new connections.
Then, during the event panel, Brian and Sarah Ingram, co-founders of Purpose Restaurants, spoke with panel moderators Kristin Reinitz, co-owners of Admit One Home Systems; and Sarah Adams, director of membership for Housing First Minnesota.
Brian and Sarah recounted the successes and trials they have encountered over their nearly 30 years in the restaurant industry. But they reminded attendees that their failures only define them if they allow them to.
The first step to growing your business? “Take the leap,” said Brian. “Don’t be afraid to jump. You have to be better about believing in yourself.”
They also discussed the community’s role in their journey as business owners. Shortly after opening their Hope Breakfast Bar restaurant, the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and they decided to close their dining room. They quickly pivoted their operations to preparing and providing meals to members of the community who were in need.
Their phones were ringing off the hook with an estimated 10,000 meal requests just in the first three days.
They say their investment in their community during the hard times is what they set out to do with their brand of restaurants – make a difference.
The idea of building a community also extends to your fellow members of the industry. “My biggest advice would be to talk to people,” remarked Sarah. “Go to lunch, take them out for coffee. Just see what they have to say.”
