The Minnesota Board of Electricity’s 2023 National Electrical Code (NEC) technical review committee wrapped its work on Dec. 6, recommending the approval of the 2023 National Electrical Code without amendments. Thie recommendation will be reviewed and acted upon by the Board of Electricity at its Jan. 10, 2023, meeting.
During the review of the 2023 NEC, the technical review committee held four meetings, three of which ran nearly two hours in length. For comparison, two meetings were held in 2019 to review the 2020 NEC, with the Board of Electricity approving the 2020 NEC moments after the technical review was completed.
“On behalf of our members, Housing First Minnesota thanks the Board of Electricity for conducting a more transparent and rigorous technical review of the 2023 National Electrical code,” wrote Nick Erickson, senior director of housing policy for Housing First Minnesota, in a letter to the committee. “Earlier, we asked this body to perform a technical review which mirrors that of the Plumbing Board and Construction Codes Advisory Council. Increasing the number of meetings and holding discussion on each and every major change is welcome and commendable.”
In total, Housing First Minnesota sent several letters to the Board of Electricity and the technical review committee since the rulemaking process began in July 2022, which were critical in improving the public’s ability to provide input on the process.
Housing First Minnesota did also submit a list of improvements to the committee for the next review, including a more in-depth cost analysis.
