Housing First Minnesota recently took part in a special Builder Town Hall hosted by three Minnesota legislators: Representative Andrew Myers, Representative Ben Bakeberg, and Representative Danny Nadeau. The event brought together homebuilding professionals, and policymakers for an open dialogue about the future of housing in our state. It served as an important opportunity to elevate the voices of builders and highlight the urgent challenges facing Minnesota’s housing market.
A Collaborative Conversation on Housing Affordability
The hosting legislators opened the town hall by acknowledging what many Minnesotans already know: our state faces a significant housing affordability and supply crisis. Representatives Myers, Bakeberg, and Nadeau emphasized their commitment to understanding the factors driving up costs and welcomed the perspectives of those on the front lines of home construction.
Housing First Minnesota members shared real-world insights into regulatory barriers, rising material costs, labor shortages, and land availability issues. Builders also underscored how policy proposals can either help unlock more housing or unintentionally add new pressures on buyers and small businesses.
Highlighting the Need for Regulatory Reform
One of the strongest themes of the discussion was the impact of local regulations on home prices. Members reiterated findings from recent research showing that Minnesota’s regulatory environment adds tens of thousands of dollars to the cost of every new home.
Builders urged legislators to consider reforms that:
- Streamline local permitting
- Modernize outdated zoning rules
- Reduce duplicative or unnecessary regulatory requirements
- Support greater housing diversity, including entry-level homes and “missing middle” options
Representatives Myers, Bakeberg, and Nadeau expressed appreciation for the industry’s candid input and committed to continuing the conversation at the Capitol as they develop future housing policy.
Industry Commitment and Perspective
Housing First Minnesota emphasized the industry’s ongoing commitment to creating safe, durable, and energy-efficient homes for Minnesotans. Builders shared examples of innovations and best practices already taking place but emphasized that meaningful policy reforms are needed to unlock greater housing supply.
Mark Foster of Housing First Minnesota captured the spirit of the event, stating:
“We value every opportunity to connect lawmakers directly with the builders who are working every day to meet Minnesota’s housing needs. When we come together to discuss challenges openly and collaboratively, we move closer to meaningful solutions that will help more Minnesotans achieve the dream of homeownership.”
Strengthening Partnerships for Real Solutions
Events like this Builder Town Hall underscore the value of collaboration between policymakers and the building community. By bringing legislators into direct conversation with professionals who experience the regulatory environment every day, we help ensure future policies are informed, practical, and grounded in real-world challenges and opportunities.
Housing First Minnesota extends its appreciation to Representatives Myers, Bakeberg, and Nadeau, along with all members who participated and shared their perspectives. We look forward to continuing this dialogue and working together to expand housing opportunities for all Minnesotans.
